Our lunchtime concert series (every Tuesday except first in a month at 1.00 p.m.) have been going for a month now, and thank you to the audience members who have joined us in celebrating the return of live music!
The first concert, featuring four incredibly gifted 12- and 13-year-olds, seems a long way back now, and that was followed up with music from saxophonist Stuart Spiers and a varied programme from brass player Wendy Jones and her pupils from Shrewsbury High School prep department.
Unfortunately, the extension of COVID precautions by a further month prevented a visit from Shrewsbury School’s Chamber Choir, but Jeremy Lund provided some casual piano music to fill the void.
You may be pleased to learn that funds raised with other generous donations (including free printing courtesy of Morris & Co.) have already covered the tuning of the grand piano, the purchase of a music stand and have allowed for an organ builder to visit to see what ‘needs doing’ to put the organ into top working order once more. Hopefully other expenses – some connected with music, some with the new church website, and other needful projects – will also be covered by the proceeds from the concerts.
Keep an eye on the Concerts and Events page too – there are some very attractive events to sign up to, many of them free of charge. Everything speaks of life stirring once more after the hateful pandemic – come and support us as we enjoy the Arts and raise money for our beautiful church!
Most items on the pew sheet apply to both St Chad’s and St Alkmunds: but please note that if you wish to give money to St Alkmund’s, please speak to a Churchwarden there – they will be only too happy to help with the necessary details!
It was a delight to launch our new series of Lunchtime Concerts in the church on the last Tuesday in May, when four young instrumentalists gave us a really memorable feast of music. Together, the four boys added up to about Grade 45 (although the average age was not quite 13), and we heard flute, violin, double bass, trumpet and piano music of a high standard.
I hope that many more people will be encouraged to attend our concerts – the next is on 8th June – you can reserve places, find details of future concerts and even find posters all on the Concerts and Events page of this website.
Our thanks to the performers, Rich, Harry, George and Richard – 15 months without concerts is a long time when you are 13 – to the accompanists, to the audience (who gave generous donations which will be devoted to music at the church) and to the other helpers who made this a very special day.
Service Times appear on the Worship and Prayer page. Why not ‘bookmark’ that page now so that in future you may find it quickly?

We are hoping to produce a further edition of the St Chad’s and St Alkmund’s Parish Magazine, with a publication date of late May or early June. Contributions, in the form of articles of interest, reminiscences, spiritual experiences, poetry, quizzes, and indeed anything else which you think might entertain or indeed educate are therefore invited and will be warmly received. Please submit your proposed contribution to this prestigious magazine to Peter Flint (St Chad’s) or John Clark (St Alkmunds) via this email address: email@example.com. Many thanks in anticipation of your participation!
With huge thanks to Richard for all his work over the last several years in putting St Alkmund’s “out there” as they say… the mantle of Webmaster has passed smoothly across to Jeremy Lund, and a new website is in place in time for the 1,111th anniversary!
If you have any comments/requests/contributions/typos/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Jeremy.
